Did She Just Steal One of Big Bird's Feathers?

Whoa, how cool is this photo from 1970 of Big Bird meeting First Lady Mrs. Nixon?
Big Bird was looking a little different back in the day.

What a Blast!
Wow, check out this volcanic eruption that occurred on Matua Island on June 12, 2009.

I am pretty impressed that NASA was able to capture Sarychev Peak erupting.

This is What it Looks Like When People Build a Bridge

This incredible photo was taken on March 23, 1909.
It is so cool to see a suspension bridge in the midst of construction.
This is the Manhattan Bridge that crosses the East River in NYC. The bridge connects Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn.
The bridge was completed 8 months later on December 31, 1909.

Indian Culture is Spreading Across the World

Thanks to photographer James Dennes, we can take a look inside the Holi Open Air Festival in Berlin.
Holi is a traditional festival that is celebrated in India.
There are many parts to the celebration, all rich with meaning, based on the story of King Hiranyakashyap and his sister.
These photos are showing the best part of the festival, known as the "Play of Colors."
In Berlin, this event was held July 29th and it was the first time Holi was celebrated in Europe.
Tickets sold out in less than a day so I suppose it was a smashing success.

What If Humans Had Polydactyly Hands?

Have you ever wondered why humans have five fingers? There must be a reason for it.
Evolutionist wonder how things would change if humans had more fingers. The effect is debatable, but there are some people that do have six fingers because of a genetic difference.

Having six fingers would definitely have an impact on learning math since we have a base ten system and children often use their hands to learn this concept.
My theory is that we would have a lot more basketball players that can dunk one handed if we had more than five fingers!

Bob Ross Remix

For those of you who have never heard of Bob Ross, he was the host of the TV show Joy of Painting from 1983-1994.
The video I'm sharing today is Bob Ross remixed by Symphony of Science's John D. Boswell.
It was created for PBS Digital Studios and it will blow your mind.

"Believe that you can do it, because you can do it."

I Want a Pet, Without the Responsibility...
Take a real close look at these parrots. Can you guess what they were made out of? Believe it or not, they were made from scraps of leather from the Hermes (a bag company) workshop. The detail is incredible.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!

Check out this great collage series by Jon Reinfort. I love how he uses different shades of the same color in each piece. Maybe in the future robots will be serving us ice cream.

Make Your Own Computer Case!
One of our goals at Cool Like Pie is to encourage people to use what has already been made and create something new with it! In many cases there is no reason to use natural resources when we have access to so much. Not only does it help the earth, but it challenges us to innovate.

The Oldest General Store in the USA Closes Down

This is Grays General Store in Little Compton, Rhode Island and it has been doing business for 224 years.
The store was opened way back in 1788 and was family owned and operated.
Now, Jonah Waite has been forced to close the doors forever after the loss of his father last month.
Jonah says that the shop just doesn't make any money and most people go to the supermarket down the street.

I long for the days when small family owned business are easier to find than giant corporations in our communities.
Don't forget to always try to support the little guy.
