The History Behind Jack-O'-Lanterns
People have been making jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween for hundreds of years.
It all started with an old Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack."
Jack was a sneaky guy who tricked and trapped the Devil.
He made all kinds of deals with the Devil in order to save himself from hell.
Finally, Jack died.
God wouldn't allow Jack into heaven.
The Devil wouldn't allow Jack into hell.
Jack simply started roaming the dark nights all alone with nowhere to go.
Jack put a burning piece of coal into a carved-out turnip and used it to light his way as he roamed the world.
At first he was "Jack of the Lantern", he later became "Jack O' Lantern"
For many years, the Irish made their own versions of Jack's lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips, potatoes, and sometimes beets.
When the Irish came to the United States, they soon found that pumpkins made the perfect jack-O'-Lanterns.
Here's to the Irish....thanks for giving us pumpkin carving parties.

People who live in the north eastern US got surprised with a freakishly early snowstorm.
It rarely snows before the kids get a chance to trick-or-treat...this was totally unexpected.
The area hit hardest?
Plainfield, MA - Received 27.8", which is the biggest snow total from this storm as of early Sunday morning.
Records for the month of October have been shattered across the Northeast.
This is a historic storm.
