How do the Olympics Effect the Arts? I'm loving this cool mosaic grasshopper bench, it is just so funky and fun. Apparently it was created due to an artistic effort put forth by English artists. The artists wanted to have a lot of public art around for the 2012 Olympics. It is amazing how an athletic event can effect the economy, arts, and culture of the hosting country. I can't help wondering why nobody is smiling. Did they put on serious faces for the camera or was this a very intense race? Source posted by Michelle Move Over Muhammad Ali These photographs from the early 1900's could have been used as an icons, similar to Rosie the Riveter's "We Can Do It" ad, in WWII. These women must have been pretty tough to be boxers. Women's boxing was introduced in the 1904 Olympics, but was later banned by most countries. For almost an entire century women did not box. Then, in 1988, the Swedish Amateur Boxing team brought the sport back. There was quite a bit of controversy as others followed. By the turn of the century, there were only five nations that officially recognized boxing as a women's sport. Source posted by Julia Watch Out Olympians How many people do you know who can ride a bike like this? It would definitely be an interesting way to race. But it's debatable whether any athletes actually raced on this track, which was known as "Keith's Bicycle Track" back in 1902, when this picture first became popular. It became so popular that is now in a collection at The Museum of the City of New York. Some people believe the image was manipulated or that there was some type of rope holding the bikers up. But to me, it looks a lot like a modern day skate park. What do you think? Source posted by Julia Mind Blowing Street Performance in Taiwan Why isn't this guy in the Olympics? Source posted by Michelle The Strange Sport of Bavarian Finger Pulling This strange sport of one finger tug-of-war dates back hundreds of years. Two competitors sit down facing each other and place one finger into a leather ring. Once the whistle is blown, each man pulls with all his might. The winner is determined by which man can pull the other over the halfway mark twice. This extremely painful sport is now a regulated sporting event in Bavaria and Austria.
