The Humble Beginnings of Airports in America

These photos were taken on the opening day of Brainard Field, the only municipal airport between New York and Boston in the 1920's.
The year was 1921...and things were a little different back then.
There was no real runway, only a giant open field.
Opening day was filled with activities such as airplane races, aerial acrobatics, and even a bomb dropping contest.
