Light Stencils

Light painting is the process of moving light sources around during a single exposure to create an overall shot. A more specific way to include light forms into a photo is with `light stencils'. The light stencil itself is made up of two main components - the stencil image, and something to contain the light while you shoot that image.

The light stencils below were created by TigTab and according to her, each image took several hours to complete.  She created her images in hidden corners of a city. TigTab said, “I find beauty in decay — those abandoned and forgotten places all around us. By bringing light into the darkness of each space, it fills that space for a moment in time, and highlights both their beauty and impermanence.”

To create her images, TigTab uses a custom made box lined with tinfoil, covered with a stencil and colored cellophane, and illuminated by a camera flash.
