U.S. Route 66: One of the Most Famous Roads in America

Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926.
This highway originally ran from Chicago, Illinois all the way to Los Angeles, California; covering a total of 2,448 miles.
Route 66 served as a major path for all those people who migrated to the West.
Small communities and businesses popped up along Route 66 and thrived due to the amount of people traveling on the road.
Restaurants, hotels, and gas stations became famous points of interest along the very long drive to California.
As time passed, other highways were built so it became more efficient to drive, and sadly, Route 66 was removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985.
Portions of the road have been designated as a National Scenic Byway and renamed "Historic Route 66" in an effort to preserve our American history.
These photos show two businesses that have managed to survive over 80 years of serving drivers on this famous road.

This past year, one of my kids' favorite classroom songs was Route 66 by The Manhattan Transfer. We sing follow along with the song and point to the towns on the map!
