Constructing the Eiffel Tower in the Days of Horse Power
Initial work on the Eiffel Tower in Paris began in January 1887.
It took about 6 months to lay the foundation; the ironwork finally began by the end of June.
There were over 18,038 different pieces that needed to be especially designed prior to putting the tower together.
Each piece of this giant puzzle was carried to the site by horse drawn carts from a factory outside of the city.
Over two and half million rivets were used to bolt this structure together.
The main structural work was completed at the end of March 1889,
however it wasn't fully operational until May 6th of that year.
It took almost 2 1/2 years to complete this project.
The Eiffel Tower was only supposed to stand for 20 years and then be dismantled in 1909.
Of course, it is still standing strong today.
