She's Much Better as an Icon Than a Life Saver
President Grover Cleveland ordered that the Statue of Liberty serve as a lighthouse in 1886.
Apparently, this was no easy project and many attempts to make her light up failed.
The new electrical technology at that time was eventually tweaked perfectly and she blazed a beam of light for the next 16 years.
On March 1, 1902 that light was shut off for good.
How did I not know this until now?
