The World's Only Corn Palace
Each year, approximately 500,000 tourist travel to the tiny town of Mitchell, South Dakota to visit the world's only Corn Palace.
This is actually the third Corn Palace Mitchell has built.
The first on was constructed in 1892 to prove to the world that South Dakota was a fertile place to farm.
In 1905, they replaced the original Corn Palace with a bigger version.
Then again in 1919, it was decided that the Corn Palace had to be considerably bigger than anyone expected to house all of the tourists.
The third palace, completed in 1921, is the one that still stands today.
The Palace is covered in murals created with naturally colored corn, grains, and grasses.
There are 13 different colored corns used!
Each year the murals are torn down and replaced with fresh new designs.
