The Golden Gate Bridge: 75 Years of Service
Before there was The Golden Gate Bridge, the only way across the San Francisco Bay was to take a ferry.
It costed about $1 per car and took approximately 25 minutes to cross in or out of the city.
Many people wanted to build the bridge in hopes that San Francisco would grow to become a much larger city once it was connected to the mainland.
However, experts warned that the high winds and crazy fog would prevent any safe bridge from ever being built.
Finally, on January 5, 1933, construction began in order to create the world's longest suspension bridge ignoring those warnings.
For the first time in construction history, a net was used as a safety precaution for the workers.
That was a big step in the direction of worker's rights and a total of 19 men's lives were saved by this important innovation.
A little over four years later, the Golden Gate Bridge was completed.
The bridge is over 2.7 miles long and hangs 692 feet above the rough waters below.
The Golden Gate Bridge is now one of the most photographed bridges in the world.
