Imagine Connecting Europe to Africa
Europe and Africa are separated by only 7.7 nautical miles of ocean, known as The Straight of Gibraltar.
For many years there have been talks of connecting these two continents by a bridge or a tunnel.
Now we may be closer than we think to seeing this dream as a reality.
In 2003, Spain (Europe) and Morocco (Africa) agreed to explore the idea of an underwater rail tunnel.
In 2006, Swiss engineers began drafting plans for the railway tunnel, but the water in The Straight of Gibraltar is very unstable and there are serious geological conditions to consider.
This area has been known to have severe earthquakes so the tunnel must be designed to endure the Earth moving.
This will be a very expensive and difficult project that will probably take a lot of time to even get started...but it's kind of fun to think about.
