Who Really Was the First Person to Fly Over the Atlantic? I was always taught that Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly over the Atlantic but there were actually two men that met this goal eight years prior to Lindbergh. On June 14th, 1919, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten-Brown flew a Vichers-Vimy twin-engine plane from Newfoundland to Ireland. Lindbergh was the first person to do this solo.
