Living Off The Land
For centuries, people have built houses with material found on the land. It always amazes me to see the ruins of homes built centuries ago. The detail is just unbelievable. The first time I saw Machu Picchu, I was shocked for days.
In 1850, the ruins of Skara Brae, a Neolithic settlement, was discovered in Scotland.
This collection of ten houses dates back to 3180 BCE-2500 BCE.
In 1850, there was a severe storm near the Bay of Skail that killed many people. After the storm cleared, the townspeople found the outline of this village. William Watt, a local of the town, began an excavation, discovering four of the houses. The project was then abandoned by 1868. Unfortunately, in 1913, a group of people starting digging with shovels and took away or ruined many of the artifacts. In 1927, the project was finally handed over to the University of Edinburgh.
