The Bravest Man
I have always wanted to skydive, but if I was given the chance I think I would be too scared and back out.
An Austrian skydiver, Felix Baumgartner, has been skydiving for 25 years, but plans to take the ultimate dive!
The jump will be from an altitude that is three times the altitude that normal airplanes fly.
Having the courage to skydive already amazes me, but jumping and falling 23 miles, sounds like the scariest thing in the world to me.
In August 2012, he will attempt this dive. Since it is so high, he will free fall off a specially made capsule from the edge of space!
The lack of atmospheric pressure at this height will allow him to break through the sound barrier within the first 35 seconds. That is faster than the the speed of sound. That is about 690 miles per hour.
I am nervous just thinking about this jump.
Felix will free fall until he reaches 5,000 feet and at this point he will open his parachute.
Felix has been planning this jump now for two years.
In total, the jump will last for approximately ten minutes; however, it will take three hours to reach the altitude he plans to jump from.
He will be wearing a pressurized suit and a special helmet. This gear will protect him from the sonic boom, the heat from the sun, and the earth's pressure.
In order to train, Felix plans to make two jumps from 60,000 and 90,000 feet.
Good luck Felix!
