"A woman floating on a surfboard near Santa Cruz, California almost ended up on the lunch menu for a humpback whale over the weekend.
Barb Roettger had her camera rolling as two hefty whales popped out of the calm waters not far from the unsuspecting surfer and a pair of kayakers."
What is going on with the whales lately?
A small pod of humpback whales are just hanging out off the Santa Cruz coast.
The are following a massive group of anchovies that are in the area to eat the plankton.
In this video we get to witness a feeding frenzy called lunge feeding.
This is when the entire herd of whales try to herd the anchovies together.
Then they shoot straight up out of the water with their mouth open so they can catch the tiny fish.
In the past few months, since the humpback pod has been hanging out, they have had quite a few close encounters with humans.
People are being warned to stay at least 100 yards away from the pod.
