After the Fall of the Roman Empire in the year 476, giant castles were built throughout Europe.
With the Roman Empire no longer in charge, there were power struggles throughout Europe.
For over 1,000 years, different tribes and cultures battled each other.
The feudal system was adopted throughout Europe in order to provide some structure to society.
Within this structure there was a powerful ruling class that gave protection to the working class in return for service or labor. The castles were built not only to defend the land from foreign invaders, but also to preserve the king’s and the nobles’ power over the land.
There are several castles that still stand today.
How much longer will they last?
These beautiful castles, photographed by National Geographic, date back to the 1400s.
