When you think of all the wars in history, it is hard to imagine that one war only lasted 45 minutes. This is especially shocking when you think of wars such as the 100 Year War or the Crusades that lasted well over 100 years. On August 27, 1896, the British Empire fought Zanzibar. Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini had just died and his nephew, Khalid bin Bargash, took control. The British were not happy about this decision. They wanted another man named Hamud bin Muhammed to be in charge since he was easy to work with. Bargash did not listen to the British so they set up five Navy ships in the harbor. The ships opened fire on the palace, causing it to fall to the ground. Bargash escaped to the German consulate where he was granted asylum. He ended up escaping and then living in exile in Dar es Salaam. He was later captured by the British. He spent the rest of his life living in Mombasa. The British insisted that the Zanzibar government pay for the shells that they fired in on the harbor.
