Artist Jason Mecier spent 5 years, 1997-2002, working on the "Pencil Vania", which means "Forest of Pencils"
This art installation is in a three-story stairwell at the private home of Jaina A. Davis in San Francisco.
He used 185,252 pencils to decorate the walls, banisters, and ceiling in this 980 square foot big space.
The pencils were collected from many different sources.
Many of the pencils were purchased from reuse centers, so they were saved from the dump and turned into art.
Jaina also held a garage sale, that instead of money, people could buy things with pencils.
