Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day?
Today is the day of love! Children go to school and exchange cards, loved ones give each other chocolate, and everyone eats too much candy.
One theory of why we celebrate this day is based on St. Valentine.
Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century.
At this time, there was an Emperor name of Claudius II.
Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married.
In order to gain more soldiers to build a bigger military, he outlawed marriage.
Valentine believed that this was not a good thing for the people so he secretly married couples.
When the Emperor found out about what Valentine was doing, he put him to death. This could just be a legend, but either way, I love the story.
