Retro Photos Of Ventriloquists
I've always thought of ventriloquism, a type of puppetry, as a strange practice.
However, I've never known anyone in my entire life who was a ventriloquist.
I set out to learn a little bit more about this stagecraft.
Did you know that ventriloquism used to be used as a religious practice?
Back in the days of the Greeks, ventriloquist were thought to be able to speak to the dead and predict the future.
Many years later, in the Middle Ages, ventriloquism was thought to be witchcraft, and considered very dangerous.
In fact, it wasn't until the 19th century that it began to be viewed as stage magic and performance art.
In the 1940's ventriloquism became very popular.
These acts were usually performed on stage with the performer sitting on a stool and a wooden dummy on their lap.
These acts focused on being really funny.
The best ventriloquists can deceive the audience by talking back and forth to the dummy quickly.
These photos are kind of creepy and kind of cool...at the same time.
