Fruit or Herb? We classify fruits, vegetables and herbs in different ways. A fruit develops from an ovary at the base of a flower and it contains the seeds of the fruit. We classify a tomato as a fruit because that is how it grows. A banana, on the other hand, is a little different. It develops from the ovary at the base, but it does not contain seeds. So what does that mean? Can it still be classified as a fruit? Wild bananas have black seeds, but commercially grown bananas are sterile and the seeds develop into black specs. So what is a banana? A herb plant's stem does not have any tissue in the stem, similar to a banana. A banana tree is actually a herbaceous plant and can be considered a herb as well as a fruit. Who knew?
