Christmas Island Crab Migration
The Christmas Island red crab is a land crab that lives on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.
These crabs are famous for there migration each year.
In October/November the adult red crabs begin to move from the forest to the coast to lay their eggs.
There are so many crabs migrating that some roads have to be closed so cars don't run the crabs over.
It has been estimated that 43.7 million adult red crabs used to live on Christmas Island.
The crabs were thriving until the arrival of a new species of ant called the yellow crazy ant.
The yellow crazy ants are believed to have killed about 10-15 million of these crabs in the past few years.
These two short videos show this great crab migration.
This first clip shows us the adult crabs hiking it to the sea.
Now the millions of baby crabs have to migrate back into the woods.
