Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on earth. It has the highest elevation above sea level with its summit being at 29,035 feet above sea level. If you measured a straight line from the summit to the center of the earth, it would equal 3,965.8 miles long. Even though Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth, its peak is not the farthest from the center of the earth. Mount Chimborazo in ecuador is only 20,565 feet above sea level but 3967.1 miles from the center of the earth. that is 1.3 miles farther away from the center of the earth! The reason Mount Chimborazo is farther away from the center of the Earth even though it is shorter is because the Earth is not a perfect sphere. Since it is constantly in motion, the force of the spinning (CENTRIFUGAL force) causes the Earth to bulge out near the equator. Since Ecuador is near the equator, the Earth bulges out more which causes Mount Chimborazo to be farther away from the center of the earth! Who knew?
