On August 30, Stewart Kern went for a 5 am jog on North Portal Drive in Northwest Washington DC.
That's when it happened. Out of nowhere, poor Stewart was clawed in the back of the head by a barred owl.
I don't think it was extremely painful, he says, "It feels like a kitten has been set on your head, claws out."
He looked up and spotted the owl sitting on a telephone wire, staring at him with his big owl eyes.
Stewart continued to run. and BAM...the same owl attacked again!
This time the owl hid in some low lying tree branches next to the sidewalk across the street.
Stewart tried to sneak out of there, but the owl made a third attempt to attack, and flew directly towards him.
Just then Stewart began waving his arms and making noises at the owl and the owl backed down.
Moral of the story: Always run with a baseball bat.
